Superman-Inspired Imager Chip

Researchers from The University of Texas at Dallas and Seoul National University have developed an imager chip inspired by Superman’s X-ray vision that could be used in mobile devices to make it possible to detect objects inside packages or behind walls.

Chip-enabled cellphones might be used to find studs, wooden beams or wiring behind walls, cracks in pipes, or outlines of contents in envelopes and packages. The technology also could have medical applications.

Immersive Technology in Education and Training Panel Talk

On the 8th of November 2023, I was a panelist for a session on ‘Immersive technology in education and training’ as part of the EU Science Hub conference on ‘Shaping the Next Generation of Virtual Worlds’. Next generation virtual worlds are a new paradigm largely growing due to the increase of ground-breaking technologies such as the internet of things, AI and XR, and the transition to the Web 4.0.

This expansion is generating numerous opportunities while also presenting challenges in various areas. My panel talk consisted of two parts. First, I presented an overview of the needs, challenges and gaps of VR in education. In the second part, I presented a brief overview of XR4ED EU project which aims in providing effective solutions to XR in education, addressing the needs, challenges and gaps.

Connecting the Brain to the Internet

A new project dubbed Brainternet can turn the brain into an Internet of Things node online. The ‘Brainternet’ project streams brainwaves onto the internet. Essentially, it turns the brain into an Internet of Things (IoT) node on the World Wide Web. IoT refers to connecting any device with an on and off switch to the internet.

Brainternet is a new frontier in brain-computer interface systems. There is a lack of easily understood data about how a human brain works and processes information. Brainternet seeks to simplify a person’s understanding of their own brain and the brains of others. It does this through continuous monitoring of brain activity as well as enabling some interactivity.
