Prosthetic Hand Device Gives Thermal Feedback

Researchers have created a device that allows people with amputations to experience such natural temperature sensations using their prostheses. The team created the MiniTouch in which a temperature sensor was placed on someone’s prosthetic hand at the location the phantom thermal sensations seemed to arise from. When the sensor detected a change in temperature away from a baseline of 32C, it sent a signal to a temperature controller. This relayed the information to another component that was mounted on the upper part of the prosthesis and touched the skin of the arm.

The temperature that had been detected by the sensor was then reproduced on the arm at the trigger location for the phantom sensations. The device reproduced temperatures from 20C to 40C. The upshot is that the person perceived a thermal sensation in their missing hand, at the location of the temperature sensor. To test the MiniTouch, the researchers fitted it to the prosthesis of a 57-year-old whose right arm was amputated below the elbow. The team found when using the device Fabrizio could discriminate between identical-looking bottles containing cold, hot, or room-temperature water, with 100% accuracy.

OPEK AI Seminar 2024

On the 12th of February, the intelligent AR assistant for education which is part of the XR4ED platform was presented at a national event entitled ‘AI in modern life-The impact on society and Media’. The event was co-organized by OPEC and CYENS and was supported by the Municipality Nicosia.

It offered the possibility of active participation of citizens in the co-demand that will grow, highlighting the modern trends, approaches, and projectiles. The event consisted of two parts, a live demonstration session where XR4ED was presented and the second part of academic presentations.

World’s Smallest Humanoid Robot

A two-legged bot that’s shorter than a standard ballpoint pen just snatched the Guinness World Record for smallest humanoid robot. The tiny bot, built by members ​​of a school robotics team in Hong Kong, stands just 5.5 inches tall. To nab the record for smallest humanoid robot, a bot must be more than just a toy. It must be capable of bipedal movement and articulating its shoulders, elbows, knees and hips.

Researchers of the robotics team designed and engineered the bot, which moves with the help of servo motors. The servos are manipulated via a control board attached to the robot’s back that can be operated via onboard control buttons or a mobile app. The DBS Robotics team said it decided to make the robot as small as possible so it can be mass-produced at lower cost.
