MeganeX 5K VR HMD

Tokyo-based IoT and mass production company Shiftall this week unveiled the MeganeX, an ultra-lightweight VR headset compatible with the SteamVR platform. Developed in collaboration with Panasonic, the MeganeX features an ultra-compact, lightweight design like that of the recently announced HTC Vive Flow. The MeganeX resembles a pair of large bifocal glasses rather than a conventional VR headset like the Quest 2 or HTC Vive. Two 1.3inch Micro OLED displays offer an incredible 5.2K resolution (2,560×2,560 per eye) with an impressive refresh rate of 120Hz.

Powered by a Snapdragon® XR1 processor, the headset supports 6DoF inside-out tracking and is compatible with the SteamVR platform, allowing users access to a massive catalog of games and apps. Like the Vive Flow, the unique-looking device sits atop the user’s head and features a foldable frame with built-in speakers for maximum convenience. At 250g, the MeganeX isn’t the lightest headset on the market; that honor goes to the Vive Flow (189g). It does weigh 253g less than the Meta Quest 2. The headset also bears a striking resemblance to Panasonic’s ultra-HD VR eyeglasses.
